About Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
The development of effective insecticide solutions to pest management has revolutionised crop production. The low costof highly effective synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and the use of prophylactic ‘insurance’ insecticide applications has unfortunately become common practice. This has resulted in significant selective pressure for the development of insecticide resistance.
To assist the Australian grains industry in managing in-crop pests, the GRDC Crop Protection Program is supporting three broad strategies to help ensure cost effective invertebrate pest management can be achieved.
These strategies are:
• develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that reduce reliance on prophylactic use of broad spectrum pesticides;
• facilitate the development of a national extension network to capitalise on regional centres of expertise in IPM;
• maintain national capacity in invertebrate pest research through better co-ordination and use of resource and the provision of training opportunities.
The northern region has a strong history of successful IPM research, extension and application across a diverse range of grain crops. To help spread this success and develop parallel models in the other cropping regions GRDC initiated a National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (NIPI). A central objective of NIPI is the expansion of IPM expertise over a broader range of crops and farming systems.

Mouse Control Factsheet
26.08.2011
Mouse numbers can build and decline rapidly depending on localised conditions.
Constant vigilance and timely monitoring and control are required to minimise crop loss.

Mouse Management Fact Sheet
13.05.2011
Mouse numbers can build rapidly in the right conditions, leading to crop damage throughout the growing season. Monitoring and early detection of an increasing mouse population is essential if effective control is to be implemented.

The National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (NIPI)
The National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (NIPI) brings together scientists from state government departments, universities, farmer groups and CSIRO to address pest management issues in the Australian grains industry.
It is supported by growers and the Australian Federal Government through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). We aim to support the grains industry in adopting more sustainable approaches to invertebrate pest management.
