The objective has been to gain, first-hand, growers’ local research needs and perspectives. It has been a very valuable exercise, reaffirming the rationale behind changes being implemented to the way the GRDC delivers research, development and extension (RD&E).

Over the past 30 years, Australian grain production systems have evolved from using cultural practices such as long fallow tillage as the primary control method for weeds, pests and disease to a reliance on pesticides. In the 2010-11 financial year the GRDC is supporting 853 research projects, of which about 18 per cent include international collaboration. This excludes projects that support travel to conferences or as part of awards, or to bring international speakers to conferences in Australia.
