About Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The development of effective insecticide solutions to pest management has revolutionised crop production. The low costof highly effective synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and the use of prophylactic ‘insurance’ insecticide applications has unfortunately become common practice. This has resulted in significant selective pressure for the development of insecticide resistance.

To assist the Australian grains industry in managing in-crop pests, the GRDC Crop Protection Program is supporting three broad strategies to help ensure cost effective invertebrate pest management can be achieved.

These strategies are:
• develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that reduce reliance on prophylactic use of broad spectrum pesticides;
• facilitate the development of a national extension network to capitalise on regional centres of expertise in IPM;
• maintain national capacity in invertebrate pest research through better co-ordination and use of resource and the provision of training opportunities.

The northern region has a strong history of successful IPM research, extension and application across a diverse range of grain crops. To help spread this success and develop parallel models in the other cropping regions GRDC initiated a National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (NIPI). A central objective of NIPI is the expansion of IPM expertise over a broader range of crops and farming systems.

CSIRO Stored Grain Research Laboratory. Since 1970, the SGRL has helped the grain industry develop a series of sound, cost-effective and safe technologies to maintain or enhance the quality of grain during storage. The Laboratory has a multi-disciplinary skill base and its capacity to effectively respond and develop industrially acceptable storage strategies to chemical and biological issues is a result of its unique close association with the Australian grain industry.
