About Us

Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA) is an unincorporated joint venture between the GRDC, Pulse Australia, the University of Adelaide, the SA Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the Victorian Department of Primary Industries (DPI VIC), the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSWDPI), the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (QDPI&F) and the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia (DAFWA).

To deliver superior pulse varieties faster, Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA) will focus on:
- excellent leadership and communications;
- accessing reliable market signals;
- accessing elite germplasm and enabling technologies;
- a proficient and cost effective breeding process; and
- ensuring rapid adoption of newly released varieties.

The establishment of Pulse Breeding Australia provides a single world-class breeding and germplasm enhancement program for chickpeas, field peas, faba beans and lentils in Australia.

By sharing germplasm, technologies and intellectual property across all states, PBA will deliver to Australian growers new pulse varieties that have better disease resistance, are higher-yielding and are adapted to Australian conditions.

PBA will deliver
- to Australian growers superior pulse varieties faster, enabling them to be more competitive in global markets;
- varieties that meet the needs of food, feed and special purpose end-users;
- a coordinated approach for the release of new pulse varieties into the Australian market, to maximise adoption
and grower benefit;
- improved education, training and teaching programs for pulse breeding;
- more rapid genetic gain through the exchange of intellectual property rights (IPR) among the partners; and
- improved efficiencies through greater integration and collaboration at the national level.

Delivering pulse varieties faster
Bringing together the four breeding programs under PBA will fast-track the release of new pulse varieties. Through the sharing of ideas, innovations and resources, such as field trial sites across Australia, there will be cost efficiencies as well as more effective breeding programs.

The breeding programs are supported by a germplasm enhancement program. PBA is committed to benchmaking each activity to ensure that the pulse breeding program and related activities are world’s best practice.
