DATE: Tuesday 1 July - Wednesday 2 July 2008
VENUE: Murdoch University, PerthThe gene technology workshops are a two-day, hands-on educational opportunity - allowing participants to gain a basic understanding of the laboratory techniques that underpin gene technology. Training includes laboratory work in DNA extraction, gene isolation and gene transfer, as well as formal lectures including a case study. The workshops are conducted by a combination of CSIRO teaching and scientific research staff from Canberra.
Participants will gain an understanding of the research involved, the advances currently provided by gene technology, an insight into future research opportunities, and details of the regulatory system underpinning gene technology research. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in discussions about key issues such as community perceptions and industry positions.
The workshops also include an evening dinner and discussion session with guest speakers. This provides participants with an opportunity to question panel members on a more informal level and discuss some of the key issues surrounding the gene technology debate.
CSIRO's gene technology workshops have now been running for many years, and have been attended by industry leaders, farmers, journalists, agribusiness professionals, teachers and school students. Attendees have indicated that they found the course extremely valuable in helping them better understand the key issues that underpin gene technology research in Australia and overseas.
