Travel Awards
The GRDC offers financial assistance to grains industry individuals or small groups wishing to attend a conference or undertake travel that may ultimately benefit the Australian grains industry. GRDC places a high priority on the dissemination and communication of knowledge gained from the experience offered by Travel Awards.
Australian grain growers wishing to obtain support for a study tour must submit a GRDC Industry Development Award (IDA) Application. This is because some of the reporting requirements set out in the Travel Award Final Report are not applicable to graingrower study tours. The IDA Final Report is designed to better capture the learning outcomes of such tours.
Travel Award Applications should not be included as part of any other GRDC research project or attached to other GRDC applications.
The GRDC invites and assesses Travel Award Applications twice a year. The next two closing dates are:
• Friday 29 August 2008 (for travel between December 2008 and June 2009, and
• Friday 27 February 2009 (for travel between June 2009 and January 2010),
Applicants are required to use the GRDC’s Word 2000 Travel Award template. This form can be completed on any IBM compatible PC with Microsoft Word 2000 (or a later version) or any word processing software that can convert from Word 2000. If you require an alternate version, please contact the Contracts Coordinator on 02 6166 4500.
Applicants should also note specific GRDC guidelines for Australian traveller biosecurity, see attached document, Rust diseases of grain crops - what should Australian travellers do?.
When your application is complete, the GRDC will require ten (10) signed paper copies (A4 size, double sided, stapled) to be submitted which will then be distributed to each member of the travel award evaluation team. These should be addressed to:

Both the hard copies and electronic copy must reach the GRDC by 5pm (AEST) on the closing date.
Applications will not be acknowledged upon receipt.
Applicants will be notified of the decision within six (6) weeks of the application closing date.
Please note: No out of session applications will be accepted
Guidelines for Travel Awards
The GRDC’s preference is for travel requests to be incorporated into project applications wherever possible. Travel that is integral to a research project should be incorporated into that project budget, with suitable justification provided. In these cases, the separate Travel Award Application form should not be used.
The GRDC will only consider Travel Awards for PhD students, if travelling within Australia.
Applications should be no more than five (5) pages.
Applicants must attach their CV to their application.
Selection Criteria
The main criteria used to evaluate travel applications include:
• Extent of likely benefit to the Australian grains industry
• Scope of proposed communication plan and implementation
• Level of financial support from employing organisation
• Previous travel grants from GRDC or other organisations
• Previous travel undertaken
• Whether the applicant is presenting a paper
