Grains Industry Undergraduate Honours Scholarships (UHS)
Grains Industry Undergraduate Honours Scholarships (UHSs) are available to students of excellence proceeding to undergraduate honours study in a field relevant to the future of the Australian grains industry.
Scholarships are for one (1) year and comprise a tax-free stipend of $5,000 and $1,000 for project operating expenses.
The GRDC invites and assesses UHS applications once a year. The application closing date, for full time study commencing in 2008, is Friday 31 October 2008.
1. Eligibility
To be eligible for a UHS:
• The candidate must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• The candidate must receive acceptance at a recognised research institution
• The candidate must undertake full time honours study
2. Selection Criteria
The main criteria used in selecting successful applicants include:
• Strong academic record as demonstrated through academic transcripts
• Quality and relevance of the project to grains industry needs
• Scientific credibility of the supervisor and institution in the area being studied
• Three (3) satisfactory referee reports submitted by the due date
3. Applying
Applicants are required to use the GRDC’s ‘Grains Industry Undergraduate Honours Scholarship (UHS) Application’ template.
Applicants must arrange for three (3) referee reports to be submitted under separate cover. The ‘Confidential Report on UHS Candidates’ form must also be used.
When completed, the GRDC requires ten (10) signed paper copies (A4 size, double sided & stapled) of the application and referee reports to be submitted. These should be addressed to:

An electronic copy of the application and all three referee reports is also required and must be emailed to forms@grdc.com.au. The name of the emailed documents should incorporate the applicant’s name.
Both the paper and electronic copies must reach the GRDC by 5pm on the closing date.
Applications will not be acknowledged upon receipt.
Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by mid December.
Please note: No late applications or referee reports will be accepted
3. Reporting Requirements
A bound copy as well as an electronic copy of the scholarship recipient’s final research thesis or final research paper must be provided to the GRDC:
(a) within 18 months after the end of the scholarship period; and
(b) within 30 days of the final research thesis or final research paper being placed in the Research Organisation’s library or otherwise being made publicly available.
A one (1) page plain English summary of the thesis/final research paper must also be provided.

The electronic copy of the thesis/final research paper and the one (1) page plain English can either be e-mailed to forms@grdc.com.au or provided on CD Rom with the hard copy.
4. Payment of scholarship funds
Scholarship funds are paid directly to the research organisation in two (2) instalments. A 75% payment ($4,500) will be made up front. The remaining 25% ($1,500) will only be paid once a final report and a bound copy of the scholarship recipient’s final research thesis/paper is received and approved.
