About PBA

Pulse Breeding Australia (PBA) is a world class Australian breeding program delivering highly adapted chickpea, field pea, lentil, faba bean and lupin varieties to growers across Australia.

Pulses are vital to the creation of sustainable farming systems across Australia. They provide disease breaks for cereal crops, improve weed control options, reduce reliance on artificial fertilisers and assist with diversifying growers’ production and marketing opportunities.

PBA has operated since 2006 and its vision is to see pulses expand to >15% of the cropping area so as to underpin the productivity, profitability and sustainability of Australian grain farming systems.

Connecting globally delivering regionally

PBA’s nationally coordinated breeding programs deliver superior pulse varieties to all Australian growing regions by:

  • capitalising on the skills and capabilities of the PBA partners
  • linking closely to pulse germplasm enhancement projects
  • examining biotic and abiotic traits
  • centralising Australian pulse breeding research and development
  • skills – building critical mass
  • creating strong international and domestic research relationships
  • ensuring PBA breeding priorities are closely aligned with grower, marketing and customer requirements.

Better Varieties Faster

The PBA breeding programs are delivering new pulse varieties with:

  • improved regional adaptation
  • higher yield
  • superior resistance to diseases (such as ascochyta and bacterial blight, botrytis grey mould, chocolate spot and anthracnose)
  • outstanding quality parameters for mainstream and special-purpose end-users
  • improved abiotic stress tolerance (such as salt, boron, heat, frost) compared to currently available varieties.

Together with its commercial partners PBA has developed models of variety release that ensure varieties are available to Australian growers up to three years faster by providing commercial parties with access to a pipeline of varieties and by ensuring:

  • seed production begins earlier in the development process
  • crop specific release advisory groups critically review data to identify varieties that can be fast-tracked to commercial release.
